Exercises at sea are totally dependent on the weather and the crew. Each participant gets a crew-training manual that contains all the information needed to complete the course. Practical exercises while sailing includes Steering, Hoisting Sails, Changing Direction, Stopping, Safety, etc. All participants will be actively engaged in sailing to increase their knowledge and confidence level while at sea.

Minimum number of participants - 8


Rule Number 1: No Make Up CLASSES. Non attendance will not be compensated for.

Details for Session 1 – Saturday October 25th

Start at Portifino Marina at 0800

Schedule:  
0800 Robert will take the class through boat design, parts of a boat, rigging.
0900 Robert will then take the class through how a boat sails.
1000 Ed Balun will go over how to prepare for and depart the slip then will talk about how to dock in the slip.
1100 Ed Balun will then go through the sails and sailboat handling.
1200 Lunch and Sails will be announced after classes completes.

Please note that all times are in nautical 24 hour clock times

All sessions are time dependent and will depend on questions and participation by the members. Please read all relevant sessions before coming to the classroom

Details for Session 2 – Saturday November 5th

Start at Kemah Board-Walk Marina at 0800

Schedule:  
0800 Mike Clark will go in to detail about the Rules of the Road while sailing
0900 Mike Clark will go through some of the various navigational aids.
1000 Sharon Zall will talk about the proper use of the marine radio
1100 Sharon Zall will go over boat safety and personal gear.
1200 Lunch and Sails will be announced after classes completes.

 

Details for Session 3 – Saturday November 15th

Start at Kemah Board-Walk Marina at 0800

Schedule:  
0800 Robert Taylor will then go over Marlinspike seamanship and how to tie the various knots
0900 Robert Taylor will talk about anchoring.
1000 Captain Tom Zaal will go into details as to the legal aspects of sailing and all the do’s and don'ts while sailing.
1100 Captain Tom Zaal will then go over weather, tides, and currents.
1200 Lunch and Sails will be announced after classes completes.

 

Details for Session 4 – Saturday November 22nd

Start at Portifino Marina at 0800

Schedule:  
0800 Cathy and Vicki will talk about seasickness and the better products on the market for seasickness.
0900 Cathy and Vicki will then go over onboard boat etiquette, what to bring, what not to bring, and the do’s and don’ts while sailing and when returning to dock.
1000 Van will go over basic first aid.
1100 Lunch and Sails will be announced after classes completes
   

Full Day Sail – final details will be provided nearer the time.
During this sail the crew will carry out the following activities:

a. Boat handling under power – down and up the channel, in the basin – holding bow into the wind, going in reverse, understand wind effect when boat has no steerage.
b. Tacking
c. Jibing
d. Reefing
e. Sail Trimming
f. Practical Seamanship
g. Sailing a Course
h. Heave To
i. Safety
j. Basic racing tactics and skills

At the end of Crew Training you will feel confident enough to sail with anyone anywhere. However as in all training you only get out of it what you put into it so come prepared to do things you have never done before.

In order to learn, ask questions – the more you ask and physically participate then the more you learn and therefore the more confident you feel.
